Um... You might want to find another source for your "saturated vs unsaturated" figure... I see several carbons with 5 bonds and one with 6!

Also, the US Energy Secretary is Steven Chu, not Paul Chu (and is awesome).

Your polyunsaturated example is wrong. Look at the interior Carbon atoms and count the number of bonds that each one has. The 2nd Carbon has five bonds, while the 3rd Carbon has six bonds.


Oh, your saturated example is wrong, too. The second Carbon has five bonds.


See - this is why they don't let physicists do even the most fundamental chemistry. I generate most of my figures myself, so the errors passed by the internal censor totally undetected. Thanks for noticing! It's been fixed.

No, it still isn't correct. While the Carbons have the correct number of bonds, you now have Hydrogens with two bonds, which can't be.


The thing about pilgrims,ash,soap and fat.Main ingredient in ANY solid soap is a fatty acid-sodium "salt".One can't make a soap using only glycerol(although it is added to many soaps).Talking about animal/plant fats and comparing them to multicarbon hydrocarbons is misleading.They are totally different chemical compounds.A bit like sugar and cyclamate.Both sweet and white powders,but I wouldn't call cyclamate a "synthetic sugar".Otherwise a good read.Peter

Perhaps in your followup you could explain how variable viscosity in motor oil is achieved. I assume it has something to with the temperature of the oil, and it would seem to be a fairly quick change. My car requires a 5W - 50 oil, a rather large change it seems. A 500 HP engine can make a lot of heat which explains the 50 part of the weight.


Plant fats? I remember the days of Castrol castor oil...and Castrol M (same stuff blended to mix with methanol)...that came from plants and smelt luvverly!!

In addition to the physically impossible double bonded hydrogens, you have depicted a very explosive looking tris(dialkyl)peroxide rather than a triglyceride. Check for correct examples of all of the above.
